UPDATE: Baton Rouge police on Tuesday reported a possible motive for a Sunday night shooting of Joel Guevara, 28, outside Guevara's apartment on Quida Mae Drive in north Baton Rouge.
Yovanni Anibal Ramos-Salazar, 31, suspected that Guevara had raped one of Ramos-Salazar's family members, the BRPD said in a news release.
Police are looking for Ramos-Salazar in the Sunday night shooting death of his neighbor. Ramos-Salazar is suspected of shooting Guevara about 8 p.m. following a “brief argument” outside Guevara’s apartment, said Cpl. Don Coppola Jr., a police spokesman.
Police said Ramos-Salazar lived in the same apartment complex as Guevara. The complex is behind the former Earl K. Long Medical Center off Greenwell Street near Airline Highway.
Police issued a warrant Monday for Ramos-Salazar’s arrest on counts of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon, Coppola said.
Guevara’s family members said the shooting occurred on a stretch of sidewalk directly outside the door of his apartment. They said a man whom Guevara knew walked up, shook his hand and then fired off at least three gunshots, killing him.
One of the tires on Guevara’s pickup truck was flat on Monday, evidently punctured by a bullet, according to his brother-in-law. What looked to be damage from a bullet also was visible on the back of a staircase outside Guevara’s apartment.
Daisy Vigil, who identified herself as Guevara’s wife, said she and her family members don’t know what caused Guevara to be shot.
Vigil said Guevara was a roofer who moved to Louisiana about two years ago from El Salvador.
She also said her husband will be sorely missed. He leaves behind a young daughter, Vigil said.
Police asked anyone with any information about the shooting or Ramos-Salazar’s whereabouts to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (225) 389-3948 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
