Man accused in rape of woman at knife point

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies on Saturday arrested a man accused in the rape of a 25-year-old woman at knife point.

Deputies booked Ron Haynes, 22, 160 S. Ardenwood Drive, Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on a count of aggravated rape.

The victim told deputies she and Haynes went to a club in Ponchatoula on Saturday, and on the way home, Haynes became upset with her after another man called her phone, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Once they got inside her home, the woman told deputies Haynes grabbed her and forced her into a bedroom where he produced a knife and threatened her, the affidavit says.

He raped her multiple times, the woman said, while she pleaded for him to stop, according to the affidavit.

Police: Burglar kicked in door, attacked resident

A convicted burglar is back in jail after police officers along with a police dog caught the man running from the scene of a home invasion Saturday night.

Baton Rouge police booked Peter Glenn Powell, 11775 Willow Oaks Ave., Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on counts of home invasions, simple battery, resisting an officer, simple criminal damage to property and simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, booking records show.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Powell is accused of breaking into the home of an 83-year-old man shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday.

Powell kicked down a door to gain entry into the elderly man’s home, the affidavit says. Once inside, police said Powell attacked the resident, punching him in the face and knocking him to the floor.

After a struggle, the victim escaped and called police. Officers found Powell running through the victim’s backyard, the affidavit says.

Once Powell was in custody, police said they found a warrant for his arrest in a September burglary. In that incident, Powell is accused of entering a home through a window by climbing on top of a barbecue pit.

Two televisions, several DVD players, a computer and a gaming console were stolen from the residence, according to an arrest warrant.

The locations of both incidents were unavailable.

Mom, stepfather arrested in beating of child, 12

Baton Rouge police on Saturday arrested a man on Friday accused of beating a 12-year-old girl with a belt buckle until she bled.

Police booked Derrick Lawrence, 38, 4825 E. Brookstown Drive, Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on counts of domestic abuse battery and resisting an officer, booking records show.

Police also booked his wife, Shalonda Anitra Lawrence, 37, who has a protection order against her husband, into Parish Prison on counts of cruelty to juveniles and obstruction of justice.

Derrick Lawrence is accused of striking the girl with a belt buckle on her back, arm and leg until the skin broke in at least two places, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Shalonda Lawrence is accused of standing by and watching as the beating happened, then trying to hide her husband and lying to police about his whereabouts, the affidavit says.

Man arrested in March shooting, wounding woman

Baton Rouge police on Saturday arrested a 32-year-old man accused of shooting a woman in the ankle in late March as she was running away from his SUV.

Police booked Derrick Eugene Green, 32, 3746 Eleanor Drive, Baton Rouge, into Parish Prison on counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, booking records show.

Green is accused of calling the woman over to his SUV about 8 p.m. on March 27 and asking if she knew him, according to an arrest warrant.

When she replied, “No,” and turned to walk away, the woman reported that Green opened fire, striking her in the ankle, the warrant says.

Duplex fire destroys one apartment on Fig Street

A fire raged through a duplex Sunday night on Fig Street, destroying one side of the residence before firefighters could extinguish the blaze.

Baton Rouge firefighters doused the flames at 6:40 p.m., 20 minutes after they arrived at 1306 Fig St., department spokesman Robert Combs said.

They were able to keep the fire from spreading to the other half of the duplex, which sustained only mild smoke damage, Combs said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but investigators suspect the fire began in near the entertainment center, Combs said.

One person was inside when the fire began, but that person was unharmed, Combs said.

Three booked, suspected of driving while intoxicated

Authorities arrested at least three people suspected of driving while intoxicated in East Baton Rouge Parish and booked them into Parish Prison between 2:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, booking records show.

Those booked and the counts against them:

  • Brady Rice, 21, 10341 La. 431, St. Amant, first-offense DWI, reckless operation, disobeying a stop sign or yield sign and a one-way street violation.
  • Carl Stevens, 34, 7622 Chad Drive, Addis, second-offense DWI, a one-way street violation and driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • Andrew Stockwell, 27, 7822 Director Drive, Baton Rouge, first-offense DWI, careless operation and driver’s license required.
