Firefighters suspect arson in a Maryland Street fire that destroyed a $200,000 home early Thursday.

When the Baton Rouge Fire Department arrived on scene at 2234 Maryland St. at 12:23 a.m., fire was already moving into the attic, department spokesman Robert Combs said.

Firefighters got the two occupants out safely and had the blaze under control by 12:41 a.m., but by then the house was a total loss, he said. “Nearly 75 percent of the structure was damaged by fire. The rest sustained significant heat, smoke and water damage.”

Investigators think the fire started in the rear of the home, Combs said. Contact them at (225) 354-1419 with information about this case.
