A man in the midst of being arrested tried to bribe deputies with $100 to let him go, resulting in more counts against the man.
Dvonte Maquel Leonard, 21, who was accused of stealing a Wal-Mart BB gun, was stopped Thursday about 11:30 a.m. after he was spotted opening the package of a semiautomatic BB gun inside a Wal-Mart at 10606 N. Mall Dr. and stuffing the device in his waistband, according to an East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office report.
Leonard purchased other items at the store, but failed to pay for the BB gun, on sale for about $30, the report said. A store surveillance employee contacted deputies, who placed Leonard into handcuffs, according to the statement.
He first identified himself to deputies under a false name, the report said.
A while later, Leonard asked deputies, “Can I give y’all something to make this go away?” and added, “I can give y’all $100 to let me go,” according to the report.
Leonard, of 318 Chisum St. in Sicily Island, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of theft of goods, resisting an officer and public bribery. His bond was set at $2,000, according to jail records.
