Deputies arrested a teenager accused of walking up to a school bus Thursday afternoon near Essen Lane and Summa Avenue and pointing a pistol at the 24 people aboard.

The children on the bus got out of their seats and huddled on the floor, the bus driver told investigators. Roy Veal, 17, accompanied at the time by 17-year-old Terriesha Hamilton, was identified as the assailant, the report says.

Deputies found the couple near Essen Lane and United Plaza, and detectives found a loaded gun in the woman’s backpack.

Veal denied pointing the gun at anyone or at the school bus and said he found the pistol in bushes outside Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, a firearm-free zone, the report says.

Deputies booked Veal, 5179 Madison Ave., into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday on aggravated assault with a firearm and illegal carrying of a weapon in a firearm-free zone.

Hamilton, 5533 Dutton Ave., was booked on a count of illegal carrying of a weapon.
