A man was arrested on a count of vehicular homicide in East Baton Rouge Parish Friday after the minivan he was driving crashed, killing his passenger, a State Police official said.
Sean Hopkins, 33, of Baton Rouge, was speeding in a Dodge Caravan on Nicholson Drive, also known as La. 30, near Gardere Lane, also known as La. 327 Spur, shortly after 3 a.m. when the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a guardrail, said State Police Trooper First Class Bryan Lee.
Hopkins’ passenger, 32-year-old Christopher Holeman, of Baton Rouge, died at the scene, Lee said.
Hopkins was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, Lee said. Neither men had been wearing seat belts.
Authorities suspect impairment was a factor in the crash, and Hopkins submitted a sample for toxicology testing at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The results are pending, Lee said.
Hopkins was arrested on counts of vehicular homicide, reckless operation and driving under suspension, and will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison upon his discharge from the hospital, Lee said.
