A man was hit and died Friday after he walked in front of a car on Greenwell Springs Road, State Police said.

William Newsom, 63, Greenwell Springs, walked into the path of a 2000 Nissan Altima driven by Connie Cutrer, 45, of Zachary, about 7 p.m. Friday, Trooper First Class Russell Graham said Saturday in a news release.

Cutrer was heading north on Greenwell Springs Road. When she crossed the intersection though a green light at Frenchtown road, Newsom walked into her path from the right, the release says. Cutrer was unable to avoid hitting Newsom.

Newsom was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Cutrer volunteered a breath test, which showed no detectable alcohol in her system. Newsom might have been impaired and a blood sample was taken for testing, Graham's release says.

No charges have been filed, the release says.

Graham noted that Newsom is the second pedestrian killed in the Troop A area in less than a week.

To protect themselves, he urged pedestrians to wear light colored or reflective clothes, walk against traffic and cross roads only when it is safe.
