Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 48-year-old man accused in the shooting and wounding of another man after an argument over a beverage placed on the back end of a truck.
Oliver Matthews told deputies he asked the man to remove his beverage from the top of Matthews’ pickup truck at around 11 p.m. Monday while they were in the 12000 block of Arena Drive, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.
When the man refused, Matthews told investigators that he knocked the drink off his truck and the man responded by punching Matthews in the face, causing his nose to bleed and a fight to begin, the report says.
But when Matthews retrieved a gun from his truck, the victim ran away, according to the report. Matthews told deputies he fired several shots at the fleeing man, striking him in the buttocks and legs, the report said.
The victim was in critical condition at a hospital, according to the report.
Matthews, of 10728 Tidecrest Drive, Baton Rouge, was booked into Parish Prison on counts of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
