Baton Rouge Police: Teenager arrested after loaded shotgun he was playing with discharges, kills friend _lowres

Ahmad Antoine, 17

A 17-year-old died Saturday evening after his friend accidentally fired a round from a loaded shotgun while playing with it, Baton Rouge Police said Sunday.

Ahmad Antoine, 17, 1915 Birch St., told detectives he was “playing with” a shotgun and was repeatedly cocking the weapon on the front porch of his home when it discharged, fatally striking Devin Anderson, a Baton Rouge Police report says.

Anderson, of the 1600 block of Bay Street, died on the porch. Family members of Anderson’s, gathered at the teenager’s home Sunday afternoon, declined to comment.

Baton Rouge Police booked Antoine into Parish Prison Saturday evening on one count of negligent homicide.

Antoine, who turned himself in to police shortly after the shooting, told officers he wasn’t involved in any sort of altercation with Anderson and the shooting was an accident, the report says.

A Baton Rouge Police detective noted in the report that, “in this case, the act of playing with a loaded firearm constitutes criminal negligence.”

Cpl. Don Coppola, a Baton Rouge Police spokesman, said Antoine and Anderson were friends.

Coppola said Sunday he wasn’t sure how Antoine obtained the weapon.

Bail for Antoine, who remained in Parish Prison Sunday evening, is set at $50,000, according to jail records.
