A homeless man was arrested immediately after he robbed a Family Dollar store at knife point and took the cash drawer with him Thursday night, a police report says.

Leonel Hernandez, 28, walked into Family Dollar, at 3154 Government St., produced a knife and ordered the clerk to give him money from the register, the Baton Rouge Police report says.

Hernandez then grabbed the clerk by her shirt collar and tried to stab her, the report says, before ripping the cash drawer from the counter and running away.

Patrol officers and police dogs found Hernandez about two blocks from the store, based on the clerk’s description of his clothing.

Police found Hernandez with a knife and the cash drawer from the Family Dollar, the report says.

Detectives called in an interpreter in the department to talk to Hernandez, who does not speak English, and Hernandez told police he robbed the store because he was hungry and homeless.

Hernandez was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on armed robbery and resisting an officer.
