A man accused of gunning down a recreational basketball player in a Baton Rouge gym in July was indicted Wednesday on a homicide charge.

Trestan Coats, 23, of 842 Peach St., was charged by an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury with negligent homicide in the July 13 death of 27-year-old Dewayne Bazille, who was shooting hoops inside BREC’s Expressway park on South 11th Street just south of downtown Baton Rouge.

Bazille’s younger sister, Janice, said at the time of his killing that her brother was an athlete who volunteered to coach children’s sports at the YMCA.

Coats is being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on bail of $85,000, according to jail records. He initially faced a count of manslaughter and illegal use of a weapon.
