A state corrections officer wanted in the May rape of an inmate taken to a hospital was arrested Wednesday.
A 30-year-old state Department of Corrections inmate was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center the night of May 4 and was raped by the officer early the next morning, a Baton Rouge Police report says.
After the inmate was treated for the initial ailment and taken to an upstairs room, one of his two guards left his side. Around 2 a.m., the remaining guard, Michael Gaiter, 58, unshackled him to let him go to the bathroom. When he returned, the inmate noticed Gaiter sitting in a chair with his gun in his lap. Gaiter said, “I got you now,” the report says.
The victim told police Gaiter raped him and then shackled him back to the bed. Gaiter then showed the man photos of his family on his cellphone, but the man said he had never met Gaiter before.
The inmate eventually fell asleep, the report says. When he woke up a new guard was on duty, and he told him he was raped.
Police later learned another inmate had complained that Gaiter, 15952 Manchester Drive, Baton Rouge, made unwanted advances while at a New Orleans area hospital. No action was taken after the initial complaint, though.
A warrant for Gaiter’s arrest was issued Tuesday on a count of aggravated rape and malfeasance in office, and the Sheriff’s Office booked him into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison early Wednesday morning as a fugitive from Baton Rouge Police.
