Baton Rouge Police arrested a 24-year-old man Tuesday after the mother of his child brought their 2-year-old son to the hospital for bruising suffered during the weekend he spent with his father.

Medical personnel contacted Baton Rouge Police and state Department of Children and Family Service officials, who began an investigation, a police report says.

Sometime during the weekend, Frederick Dewayne Cowart, 24, texted the boy’s mother to tell her there was a mark on her son but not to worry, the report says. After she picked up her son, she told police he began complaining of pain. She found bruising on his abdomen, buttocks and legs, so she took him to the St. Elizabeth Hospital emergency room.

The mother told police that Cowart, 2909 Addison St., Apt. 8, said he and a woman identified in the report only as “Aunt Patty” whipped the 2-year-old with a belt for breaking the television.

Medical records indicate the bruising on the boy’s back was consistent with being hit with a rope-like object. The bruising indicated assault, and the boy told hospital personnel his “daddy whipped him,” according to the police report. Police observed the bruising and said the injuries were severe, as the victim’s skin was red and bruised.

Cowart was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of cruelty to a juvenile.
