Traffic dispute on neighborhood street leads to argument, shooting and one man dead _lowres

Walter Houston

A man was shot and killed on Iroquois Street Tuesday evening, according to Baton Rouge police.

East Baton Rouge Coroner Dr. William “Beau” Clark identified the victim of the shooting as Walter Houston, 33. Police said he was shot in the chest around 6:50 p.m. on the 3300 block of Iroquois Street, located between the split north and southbound lanes of Acadian Thruway. Houston died on the way to a local hospital, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely.

The shooting stemmed from a fight between two families, he said.

A bystander at the scene who declined to give his name reported hearing at least two shots in the area.

Investigators were holding a man in the back of a police car at the scene, but no one has been arrested in the case, said McKneely.

“If they had anyone in the car it was just strictly for questioning,” he said.

Police have not named any suspects, but have identified a person of interest, McKneely said.

The shooting remains under investigation.
