Police on Thursday arrested a young Lafayette man accused in the June 9 killing of a middle-aged man, who was found dying of multiple gunshot wounds on Hazel Street.

The Lafayette Police Department arrested 21-year-old Courtlyn Sam one week after officers found Stephen Phillips, 48, known as “The General,” lying in the roadway shortly before 2 a.m., a department release late Thursday says.

Sam was booked into Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on counts of second-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm, according to the release.

The investigation is ongoing, the release says.
