A 5-year-old boy told police last week he was afraid to go home after a man whipped him with a belt for misbehaving in school, according to a Baton Rouge police report.
The man, 22-year-old Kalvin Edmond, lives in the same home as the boy and his mother, according to the report. Police say the mother told detectives she gave Edmond permission to whip the boy after he got in trouble.
She also told police she watched him whip the boy with a belt six times on the buttocks and on the back of the legs. Investigators say the child had significant bruising down the back of his thighs to his ankles.
Police and state Department of Child and Family Services interviewed the boy at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
Edmond, 225 College Drive, Baton Rouge, was booked Wednesday into Parish Prison on a count of cruelty to juveniles.
