Two people were taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon with injuries sustained in a fire at a Plank Road apartment complex, authorities said.

The fire broke out around 3 p.m. at the Edgewood Place Apartments at 10021 Plank Road in north Baton Rouge. The fire appears to have began in the bedroom of an apartment unit and spread into the attic, but the cause remains under investigation, Brownsfield Fire Chief Carroll Campbell said.

A couple of rooms in the apartment received smoke and water damage, but it was contained to that unit, Campbell said.

The Brownsfield, Baton Rouge, Central and Baker fire departments responded to the fire, which took just a few minutes to bring under control, he said.

A young child and an adult were taken by ambulance to the hospital, but they did not receive any burns, EMS spokesman Mike Chustz said.

The child was treated for smoke inhalation, and an elderly man was treated for a hand injury, Campbell said.
