A McKinley High School junior was arrested Tuesday morning after bringing a loaded handgun to school, said East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks.

Owen Salgado Galo, 17, of 8220 Governor Drive, was booked into the parish prison on counts of illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and having a gun with an obliterated serial number, Hicks said.

Galo, who carried the .380 caliber handgun in his book bag, claimed he didn’t know where the weapon came from. The 11th grader had been in a fight with another student at a bus stop, and once he arrived at school, administrators searched both students and discovered the weapon, Hicks said. Neither student make any threats, she said.
