Man hurt in shooting on St. Gerard Street
A Monday night shooting in the 5500 block of St. Gerard Street left a 23-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his upper and lower torso, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Officers responded at 11 p.m. to the LSU Urgent Care Clinic at 5439 Airline Highway, where the victim was taken after first going to a nearby CVS pharmacy, Baton Rouge police Capt. Ronald Norman said in a news release.
The victim was later taken to a hospital.
Woman pulled from burning house Tuesday
Central firefighters battled two blazes Tuesday, a storage building fire on Blackwater Road in the morning and a house fire on Jackson Road in the afternoon, during which Chaneyville firefighters pulled a woman from a burning home.
Firefighters from Central, Baker and District 6 converged on the storage shed fire in the 12900 block of Blackwater Road about 10:30 a.m. after a passing motorist called it in, Central Fire Deputy Chief Charles Mondrick said.
They had the fire under control about 10 minutes later, Mondrick said. The fire caused about $18,000 of damage and was caused by an electrical malfunction.
About four hours later, another motorist called the Chaneyville Fire Department about a house fire at the 13400 block of Jackson Road, Mondrick said. Firefighters from Pride, Zachary and Central assisted.
Inside the home, firefighters found a woman lying on the floor in the front room as the house burned around her, Mondrick said. She initially did not want to leave the home but soon relented.
Careless smoking is suspected as the cause of the fire, Mondrick said. The fire caused about $50,000 in damage.
Man arrested in head-butt attack
A head-butt that knocked a tooth out of a man at the Mellow Mushroom restaurant on Burbank Drive on July 3 landed a 20-year-old man in jail Monday on second-degree battery.
Witnesses told Baton Rouge police that Jonathan Joseph Petty walked up to the victim, who was with Petty’s ex-girlfriend, and head-butted him once, according to the arrest warrant. The attack knocked out a tooth, and the victim sustained several cuts on his lips.
The victim told police he also may have been knocked unconscious by the blow from Petty, 4441 Burbank Drive, Apt. 205, Baton Rouge, the warrant says.
BR man booked in attempted murder
Sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday arrested a man accused of choking a Baton Rouge woman July 14, telling her she “was going to die tonight.”
The victim, on the verge of losing consciousness, bucked hard enough that she got free of Brandon Maurice Graham’s grip, then jumped through a window while screaming for help, according to the arrest warrant.
Graham, 28, slipped away, leaving in a white Chevrolet Impala, the warrant says.
The victim told deputies Graham went to her South Harrell’s Ferry Road apartment about midnight Sunday under the guise of wanting to talk about their relationship. But once her 4-year-old son left the room, Graham became irate while asking her about pictures on her cellphone, the warrant says. Then he allegedly pushed her onto the bed and wrapped his hands around her neck.
Graham, 734 Fountainbleau Drive, Baton Rouge, was booked into Parish Prison on one count of attempted second-degree murder.
