A Prairieville grandmother and her 2-year-old grandson who were reported missing and believed to have been abducted were found safe and unharmed shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
State Police had issued an Amber Alert for Mary Jones, 54, and her grandson, Denim Bureau, after they were reported missing Saturday morning. State Police said the two were believed to have been abducted by Mary Jones’ husband, Troy Jones, 48, who may have kidnapped her after recent domestic disputes.
Mary Jones’ daughters, Doretha Bureau and Brandy Clayton, said officers found their mother and Denim Bureau at a hotel in Calcasieu Parish. They were discovered there by Calcasieu Parish sheriff’s deputies about 4 p.m., who took Troy Jones into custody, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Doretha Bureau, the child’s aunt, said Mary Jones was supposed to bring the boy to her that morning but never showed up. The family called authorities about 9:30 a.m. after Mary Jones’ employer said she did not make it to work and they were unable to reach her.
Mary Jones and Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley knew each other, her daughters said, through her work at the Pelican Point Golf Club, where the sheriff golfs.
“We didn’t get any of that, ‘You need to wait 24 hours to file a missing persons report,’ ” Doretha Bureau said. “Jeff Wiley took no time getting out here. He said he was going to take care of it, and he did. He said, ‘Ms. Mary’s my girl. I’m going to take care of this.’ ”
Clayton said the police had come out two weeks prior when Troy Jones had threatened Mary Jones’ life, which she said he had done on more than one occasion. The two were married about a decade ago but separated a couple of years ago.
Clayton said she was told that Troy Jones rode over to the house on his bike Saturday morning, hid behind a truck at the front of the house and then abducted Mary Jones and her grandson, driving off in her Hyundai.
Several family members who had just returned home after hearing the news said they were happy she was safe, though they had not gotten the chance to see her yet.
Allison Hudson, a spokeswoman for the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, said there were three active warrants for Troy Jones at the time of his arrest, including counts of aggravated assault and domestic abuse battery.
