A Maurice woman was killed in a four-vehicle crash during a traffic jam Tuesday morning on Interstate 10 in Iberville Parish.
Tracy Franques, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene after the 7 a.m. pile-up on the eastbound lanes of I-10 west of Ramah, a State Police news release says.
Traffic was stopped due to congestion on the eastbound lanes when John Witt, of Texas, trying to come to a stop in a 2007 International box truck, had to steer to the left to avoid striking the vehicle in front of him, State Police said. Witt hit Franques, who was in a 2013 Ford Focus. Franques’ vehicle then struck Jason Ross, also of Texas, in a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, and Ross was pushed into the right lane.
Franques’ vehicle continued to move forward and struck an 18-wheeler, driven by Danny Richard, of Crowley, the release says.
Though Franques was restrained, she suffered fatal injuries during the crash.
Witt, 57, and Ross, 33, received minor injuries. Police do not suspect impairment to be a factor in the crash, but toxicology samples from Witt, Ross and Franques were submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Richard, 56, was given a chemical breath test, and he showed no signs of impairment, the release says.
The incident remains under investigation and will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office in Iberville Parish.
