A man was in critical condition Monday night after he walked into a Baton Rouge Police station, announced he was going to kill himself, then fired a shot into his upper torso, Baton Rouge Police said.

The 52-year-old man walked into the 3rd District Precinct station at 11010 Coursey Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. armed with a handgun and told an officer at the front desk he was going to kill himself, police said in a statement. The officer tried to talk the man out of pulling the trigger, but the man ultimately fired a single shot, the release says. The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
