A man who broke into an apartment off Airline Highway early Tuesday morning was shot multiple times by one of the residents, suffering numerous injuries, police said Wednesday morning.

The suspect kicked down the door and forced his way into the apartment around 5 a.m. in the 3200 block of Victoria Drive, said Baton Rouge police spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely Jr.

One of the three residents in the apartment armed himself with a handgun and shot the suspect, McKneely said. The suspect tried to flee but collapsed outside the building.

He was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

McKneely said the 34-year-old man will be booked into Parish Prison on home invasion counts following his release from the hospital. The investigation is ongoing
