A mother and her six children escaped their burning home late Friday, but their house was destroyed, a Fire Department spokesman said.

No one was injured in the blaze at 4541 Wells St., Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Curt Monte said Saturday in a news release. The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene about 10:40 p.m. Friday to find the house engulfed in flames, the release says.

Initial reports indicated that someone was trapped inside the burning home. But after a “primary search,” firefighters determined that the house was empty, Monte’s release says.

The fire was under control at 10:55 p.m.

The loss of the home and its contents is estimated at $40,000, the release says.

The Red Cross was on the scene to assist the family, according to the release.
