A 27-year-old Baton Rouge man was killed and two people were injured after the pickup truck the man was driving ran off the side of Greenwell Springs Road early Friday and struck a tree.

State Police said the crash happened just after midnight when Rene J. Lanau was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger truck northbound on Greenwell Springs Road (La. 37) north of Liberty Road (La. 409).

Lanau was unrestrained at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries, State Police said in a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A toxicology sample was taken from Lanau and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

A 21-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were also unrestrained in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge with minor to moderate injuries.
