A Baton Rouge Police Department motorcycle officer escorting a funeral procession on Highland Road through the LSU campus was hospitalized with moderate injuries following an accident Wednesday afternoon, a police spokesman said.
The two-vehicle accident, which occurred about 2 p.m. near the intersection of Highland and Tower Drive, remains under investigation, Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola said.
The procession was southbound on Highland Road when a vehicle, apparently not part of the procession and ahead of the officer, attempted to make a left turn into a private drive, Coppola said.
The officer, who was not immediately identified except that he’s been with the department for eight years, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. The accident remains under investigation, Coppola said.
