Police: Train crash victim recovering

A passenger in a pickup that hit a train Monday night on South Choctaw Drive between Airline Highway and Commerce Avenue was recovering Tuesday, Baton Rouge police said.

The passenger, who was not identified, underwent surgery Monday night, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

Officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of South Choctaw at 8:09 p.m. Monday, Capt. Dwayne Bovia said in a news release.

A 1997 Ford Ranger was heading east on South Choctaw and apparently didn’t see the train crossing South Choctaw at the time, Bovia said.

The truck struck the front portion of the train’s engine, Bovia said.

The truck’s passenger was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, Bovia said.

Police questioned the driver, who was not identified, Bovia said.

McKneely said it appeared the driver was not cited by officers in the accident.

No one on the train was hurt, McKneely said.
