One man has been arrested after allegedly running a shoe shine scam in the French Quarter, according to New Orleans police.

Jerome Matthews, 38, was taken into custody after victims reported the scam Thursday morning in the 600 block of Decatur Street.

A male and female victim told police they were walking in the area when they were approached by Matthews and an unknown woman. They said the woman placed beads around their necks, and Matthews proceeded to put lotion on the man's shoes and begin cleaning them.

The victims reported that Matthews then put his arms around the man, and demanded money. The man told police he went to a nearby store's ATM and withdrew $40, saying he feared for his safety. After withdrawing the cash, Matthews "snatched" the money and fled, according to police.

Matthews, whom police said has a history of running the scam, was located at the intersection of Decatur and Wilkinson streets shortly later and taken into custody. The woman was not located.
