PRAIRIEVILLE -- The State Police are investigating the fatal crash of a man who was not wearing his seat belt, crashed his car into a culvert and utility pole off La. 73 and was partially ejected early Tuesday morning, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

The crash occurred on La. 73 north of Interstate 10 around 2 a.m., the release says.

A preliminary investigation revealed that 22-year-old Carl McKnight was driving a 2004 Saturn north on LA 73 north of Interstate 10 when he entered a right-hand curve and ran off the road to the left, the release says.

McKnight over-corrected and the vehicle re-entered the roadway and began to rotate clockwise as it crossed the roadway and ran off the road to the right.

The car then hit a culvert, vaulted into the air, and struck a utility pole, the release says.

McKnight was pronounced dead on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, the release says.

Troopers suspect alcohol to have played a role in the crash and have submitted a sample of McKnight’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis, the release says.
