Baton Rouge police responding early Sunday to reports of a traffic accident instead found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was found around 1:45 a.m. near 2800 73rd Avenue.

Police said their investigation indicates that the victim was standing in his front yard when an unknown gunman walked up and fired several shots, striking him in the head, before fleeing in an unknown direction. A motive for the shooting was unknown.
