Police say a man struck a woman in the head with a glass ashtray on Saturday night — and an officer had to force his way into the home to stop the attack.
Leroy Chapman, 57, was arguing with a woman at his Ford Street home and when the attack escalated, she called Baton Rouge police and left the phone line open, allowing a 911 operator to listen to it, according to a police report.
Chapman picked up a “large heavy glass ashtray” and slammed it into the back of the woman’s head, according to the report. The blow caused the woman to lose consciousness — but Chapman then punched the woman in the mouth with a closed fist, the report says.
As an officer approached the front door of Chapman’s apartment, he heard a “loud clap sound’, which led the officer to make a forced entry into the apartment where he found Chapman standing over the woman with blood all over the floor, the report says.
Chapman, of 6718 Ford St., Apt. B, was booked into Parish Prison on a count of aggravated second-degree battery.
