A tractor-trailer sustained extensive damage in a Wednesday morning accident on Airline Highway. A passenger in the rig received minor injures.
The accident occurred early Wednesday around 6 a.m. on Airline Highway, near the intersection with Goodwood Boulevard.
Baton Rouge Police Cpl. Don Coppola said the 18-wheeler left the roadway and struck a pole. Its driver was cited for careless operation and his passenger suffered minor injuries, Coppola said. The driver showed no impairment, he said.
Debris from the crash, including a falling traffic light, hit another vehicle but didn’t hurt anyone, Coppola said.
Hazardous materials crews with the Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to the scene, where about 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled out of the truck’s fuel tanks, said agency spokesman Curt Monte.
Monte said the truck may have been transporting processed chicken.
The spillage is now contained, Monte said, but hazmat contractors are working to clean up the mess.
