Baton Rouge man accused of hitting a woman in the face with a tire rim; same man wanted in Dec. 8 shooting, police report _lowres

Sherman Bessie, 36

A Baton Rouge man already wanted on an attempted murder count was arrested Monday after police said he threw a tire rim at a woman’s face and was found in possession of a stolen vehicle.

Sherman Lee Bessie, 36, is accused of causing severe lacerations to a woman’s face after striking her with a tire rim on Sunday, according to a Baton Rouge Police report. A tire rim was found lying next to the woman in the 1800 block of Arizona Street about 9 p.m., the report said, but it does not indicate why Bessie was not arrested immediately after that incident.

Several hours later, an officer returned to the address after finding Bessie in possession of a stolen black Cadillac Escalade, the report said.

Bessie faced an outstanding warrant in a shooting of another man who had a wound to his neck, according to a separate Baton Rouge Police report. In that incident on Dec. 8 at an address on Shay Drive, Bessie is accused of firing at a man after starting an argument, the document said. Bessie, identified by the nickname “Black” by the victim, fled in a four-door sedan, according to the report.

Baton Rouge Police Cpl. Don Coppola said Monday the man shot in the neck is expected to survive.

Bessie, of 1865 Arizona St., was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, second-degree aggravated battery and theft of a motor vehicle.
