A Tickfaw man died in a three-car crash in Tangipahoa Parish after fleeing from Hammond Police officers who had tried to conduct a traffic stop on him for failure to yield, Louisiana State Police reported.

The fatal crash happened shortly before noon Wedneday on La. 1065 near Sims Lane in Tickfaw. State Police reported that Darious Rashaad Ashton, 21, died in the crash.

State Police said that when Ashton tried to get back onto La. 1065, he ran a stop sign and struck a 2004 Honda Accord driven by Trey Thomas, 20, of Bogalusa. After the initial crash, Ashton's car was also struck by a GMC dump truck driven by Daniel Funderburk, 36, of Independence.

Ashton, who was not wearing a seat belt, died shortly after being taken to North Oaks Health Systems in critical condition. Thomas was wearing a seat belt and also taken to North Oaks where he was treated for minor injuries. Funderburk was not injured, State Police reported.

As part of the on-going investigation, blood samples were taken and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
