CLINTON — A police task force seized 80 packets of outlawed synthetic marijuana and more than $46,000 in cash from a convenience store on July 28 and arrested the store owner Friday, Police Chief Eddie Stewart said.

Anthony Park, 63, owner of DB’s Food Mart, 10808 Plank Road, surrendered at the East Feliciana Parish Prison after the State Police crime laboratory confirmed the packets contained synthetic marijuana and police obtained a warrant for his arrest.

Park was booked with possession of synthetic cannabinoids with intent to distribute and transactions involving drug proceeds. The state Legislature banned the sale of synthetic marijuana earlier this year.

Members of the East Feliciana Municipal Police Strike Force Group made controlled buys of the outlawed drugs July 28 and obtained a search warrant for the business later in the day.

Some of the marked bills used in the undercover purchases were found with the larger amount of cash in the store later that day, Stewart said.

The 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and obtained a warrant through District Judge William G. Carmichael to begin forfeiture proceedings for the $46,781 seized in the raid, Stewart said.

The task force was formed last year as a joint effort by the police departments in Clinton, Jackson, Norwood, Slaughter and Wilson to reduce drug and violent crimes, Clinton police Staff Sgt. James Cook said in a news release.

In addition to the convenience store investigation, the strike force has begun serving arrest warrants obtained as a result of a nine-month undercover investigation, Cook said.

On Thursday, the team arrested Jeffrey D. Franklin, 29, 10818 Bayou St., Clinton; and Martin L. Cannon, 25, 10712 Wilson St., the news release says.

Franklin was booked on three counts of distribution of marijuana, while Cannon was booked on a count of distribution of crack cocaine.

When the two were arrested, police found 5.8 grams of marijuana in Franklin’s possession and 1.3 grams of crack cocaine within reach of both men, Cook said.
