Update 9:30 a.m. Thursday:

Officials have identified the deceased as Kittie Johnson, who died inside her home Wednesday night after calling 911 to report the fire.

Original story:

One woman died during a house fire in St. Francisville after calling 911 for help Wednesday evening, said West Feliciana Parish Fire Chief James Wood.

Officials have not yet released the name of the victim, pending notification of her family members.

Wood said the woman called 911 asking for help and told dispatchers she was trying to escape from her house, which was on fire. Crews were unable to enter the house upon arrival a few minutes later because of intense smoke and heat.

Firefighters responded shortly after 6:40 p.m. to the 7800 block of Solitude Road in St. Francisville. Wood said flames were already coming through the windows in the back of the older wooden house, which is likely where the fire started.

He said the woman who lived there died in her bedroom, having likely tried to get as far as possible from the flames and shield herself there.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Wood said.

More information to come.
