A tank at a Longwood Plantation Road oilfield storage facility caught fire and burned for more than three hours late Friday night after firefighters arrived.

The St. George Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Gardere area facility shortly after 8 p.m., and found one of five tanks on the site engulfed in flames, fire department officials said in a news release.

Firefighters determined the best course of action was to contain the fire and let it burn out until the flames could be safely extinguished with foam, which happened around 11:38 p.m., the release says.

Residents living in a nearby home reported hearing a loud boom during the fire and said a 5-inch piece of metal came through their roof, although no one was injured.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department assisted, State Police and the Department of Environmental Quality all assisted the St. George Fire Department on the scene.

Information was not immediately available Saturday on the fire’s origins.
