Baton Rouge police identified the man fatally shot at a condominium complex on Florida Boulevard late Monday as 25-year-old Eddie Samuels.
Police spokesman L'Jean McKneely said that Samuels was visiting a family member at the Summer Grove Condos around 10:30 p.m. when he received a phone call, stepped outside and was shot.
Samuels was found face down on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds outside the complex in the 12000 block of Florida Boulevard, McKneely said. All that remained to mark the scene on Tuesday was a strip of tangled crime scene tape.
East Baton Rouge Coroner Dr. Beau Clark said the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the torso after a Tuesday morning autopsy.
The victim’s cousin, 26-year-old Jeremiah Hall, drove to the home where Samuels lived on Tuesday morning after someone called to tell Hall the news. Hall said Samuels always enjoyed life and had just gotten a new job working at McDonalds.
“I don’t see how that could happen,” said Hall, tears welling up in his eyes. “He ain’t no gangster ... no thug.”
Hall said he and Samuels were mistaken as twins growing up because they looked similar and he always tried to protect his little cousin. Samuels had one son, Hall said.
Investigators have not identified a motive in the shooting. McKneely asked for anyone with information to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at 344-7867.
