A 30-year-old Baton Rouge woman was found dead Thursday near a motel trash bin with a shoestring tied around her neck, a Baton Rouge police spokesman said.

A guest staying at the Motel 6 at 9901 Gwenadele Ave. discovered the partially nude and beaten body of Kristin Lynn Granier just before 8 a.m., Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

When police arrived, they found Granier, 304 S. 17th St., lying next to a trash bin in the back parking lot of the motel, McKneely said.

A T-shirt had been pulled over Granier’s face and a shoestring had been tied around her neck, McKneely said.

Granier’s cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.

As of late Thursday, police did not have many details surrounding Granier’s slaying.

McKneely said investigators are trying to determine whether Granier was a guest at the motel.

They also are trying to figure out whether Granier was killed at the motel or if her body was dumped there, McKneely said.

Investigators said Granier was a prostitute and she was working near the motel prior to being killed, McKneely said.

The parking lot of the motel near Interstate 12 and Airline was almost empty Thursday afternoon. Two women hanging out in a stairwell with their children declined comment.

Motel employees also declined comment, forwarding all questions to the establishment’s corporate office. A call made to the office was not returned. Granier’s family was not available.
