INDEPENDENCE - Deputies arrested two men on aggravated cruelty to an animal after a dead horse was found beside a road, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Monday.

The horse was tied to a tree on the side of South Carson Road, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

The horse, which had been trampled by other horses in a horse trailer, was tied to a tree so it could be removed from the trailer when the truck drove away, said Dawn Panepinto, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.

The horse became dehydrated on a trail ride Saturday and was placed in a horse trailer with other horses, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The animal apparently fell down in the trailer and was trampled by the other horses. Upon realizing that the horse had died, the men in the truck tied the horse to a tree, pulled it from the truck and left the scene, Panepinto said.

On Sunday night, deputies arrested Michael Tanner, 14131 Stevens Road, Independence, and Derrick Couch, 14141 Raven J. White Road, Independence, on aggravated cruelty to an animal, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
