An Opelousas man died early Sunday in a crash on La. 749 in St. Landry Parish, State Police said.

Herbert Rideau, 38, was driving north near Opelousas about 1:30 a.m. when his pickup truck ran off the right side of the road, said Trooper 1st Class David Brooks, State Police spokesman, in a news release.

The truck continued though a private lot and crashed head-on into an unoccupied 18-wheeler, Brooks said. Rideau was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Toxicology tests are pending and the crash remains under investigation.
