An 18-wheeler broke apart Wednesday while carrying 50,000 pounds of herbicide on North Boulevard and 6th Street — causing road closures at the intersection for several hours, according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.
The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. when the tractor trailer’s driver made a right turn that sent a wheel onto the curb, said Curt Monte, a Fire Department spokesman.
The lifted tire forced the truck’s cargo to shift around — and in the ensuing adjustment, the trailer split open in the middle, Monte said.
There were no injuries and no environmental risk from the accident, Monte emphasized. The off-loading of the “industrial totes” carrying herbicide was expected to last into Wednesday night.
