Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a thief who tried to steal almost $600 of baby formula from the Wal-Mart on College Drive on Aug. 16.

The man threw several cartons of baby formula into a shopping cart and pushed it out the front doors before a deputy stopped him, sheriff’s spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.

When he heard the deputy call him, the thief took off running across College Drive, leaving the loot behind, Hicks said. Store employees told deputies the man had tried stealing baby formula from another store nearby.

The thief was wearing clothing usually worn by Wal-Mart employees who collect store carts in the parking lot — khaki pants, navy shirt and traffic vest, Hicks said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (225) 389-5000 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
