A Gonzales man was arrested after he allegedly fired a weapon inside Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge late Wednesday night.
No injuries were reported.
According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, members of the hospital staff alerted authorities, saying they saw a man standing in a crowd of people when they heard gunfire.
The man, later identified as 22-year-old Brandon Williams, then ran down a flight of stairs, staff members told the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office. Video surveillance shows him entering a men's bathroom on the hospital's first floor, across from the chapel. A deputy recovered a handgun in the bathroom's garbage can after Williams left. The gun had one spent shell casing in the cylinder, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
After searching Williams, no gun was found, and he was arrested and booked on counts of illegal use of a weapon (a felony), taking of contraband to state-owned hospitals (a felony) and criminal damage to property. Williams, 417 E. McArthur St., Gonzales, denied the allegations and said he didn't have a gun.
It's unclear whom he was shooting at and what his motive was.
Our Lady of the Lake released a statement Thursday morning saying a visitor's firearm "accidentally discharged into the floor."
