A teenager was arrested in a shooting Tuesday night in Baton Rouge that left a woman critically wounded outside a Waffle House restaurant.

The 16-year-old boy was booked on counts of negligent injuring and juvenile in possession of a firearm, Baton Rouge Police spokesman Cpl. Don Coppola said.

A 19-year-old woman was found shot in the back while sitting in the front passenger seat of a Toyota Camry at the restaurant at 2363 College Drive, Coppola said.

Detectives believe the shooting happened in the 5000 block of Florida Street as the teenage boy, who was sitting in the rear seat of the Camry, accidently fired the handgun. The victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but is now in stable condition, Coppola said.

The juvenile was booked into the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center.
