State Police on Monday arrested an employee with the Office of Motor Vehicles suspected of stealing more than $4,000 from the office — and then falsifying records in an effort to cover her tracks.

Heather Prather, 34, who has worked with the OMV for eight years, admitted to police that she had siphoned away cash for her own use while handling cash from the public at the OMV office on 7701 Independence Blvd., said Lt. J.B. Slaton, a State Police spokesman.

Prather then altered the records to divert suspicion, according to Slaton.

Employees called law enforcement when they were conducting a regular review of their records and noticed that more than $4,000 was missing, and that there were several discrepancies in the records for motor vehicle quality reviews, Slaton said.

Prather was placed on administrative leave, and an internal investigation is underway, Slaton said.

Prather, of 13998 Carey Road, Baker, was booked into Parish Prison on counts of felony theft, injuring public records and malfeasance in office.
