A 58-year-old woman was killed Sunday evening when she drove into the path of an oncoming vehicle on U.S. 61 just north of Thompson Creek in West Feliciana Parish, State Police said.

Sharron Villere, of Jackson, was not wearing a seat belt when she crossed the southbound lane shortly after 7 p.m. trying to get to the northbound lane, and drove into the path of James Newton, 60, said Trooper 1st Class Jared Sandifer, a State Police spokesman. Newton’s van smashed into the driver’s side of Villere’s car.

Villere was pronounced dead at the scene, Sandifer said. Newton, of Winnsboro, suffered minor injuries.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, Sandifer said.
