Authorities are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man found hanging in his room at the East Louisiana State Hospital in Jackson on Tuesday.
Darnell Bailey, who was committed to the mental hospital by a New Orleans judge in December, was discovered by hospital staff Tuesday morning, said Samantha Faulkner, spokeswoman for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
The East Feliciana Parish coroner has not yet determined the cause of death, Faulkner said, and the incident remains under investigation.
Bailey was charged in Orleans Parish with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count each of aggravated burglary, armed robbery and illegal possession of stolen things for allegedly stabbing two people after barging into their Seventh Ward home on May 24, 2015.
He allegedly burst into the home in the 1300 block of Annette Street in New Orleans, began ransacking a 24-year-old woman’s room and stabbed her. When she screamed, a 25-year-old male roommate attempted to come to her aid but was also stabbed by Bailey, police said at the time of his arrest in July.
Both victims were hospitalized but survived the attacks.
An Orleans Parish judge ruled Dec. 1 that Bailey was incompetent to stand trial following evaluations by a psychiatrist and psychologist.
