Jimeelah Crockett, 26, of 2136 N. Lobdell Boulevard is accused of fatally shooting 38-year-old Joseph Bunch III just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 20 in the parking lot of the Ardendale Oaks Apartment Complex, where they lived.

Crockett and Bunch had been dating for about two years and shared a child, Coppola said.

"It's a very sad situation, domestic violence as a whole," Coppola said. "But for someone to lose a life because of it …"

Detectives had originally interviewed Crockett after the shooting, when it was noted that she had a busted lip, slight redness on her back, legs and elbows and scratches on her neck. She told police then the marks and bruising were from Bunch hitting and beating her that night during a fight inside their apartment, her arrest report says. She told them that later on in the night she shot him in the parking lot because she was in fear of her life, the report says, and detectives released her.

Crockett also initially told officers that she woke up her 8-year-old daughter and grabbed her infant after the fight and left the apartment. When the girl was interviewed by police on Aug. 22, however, the child said she witnessed the fight, according to the report.

"Her daughter's story differed vastly from Jimeelah's story," police wrote in the report. However, police said the child would not provide details and often replied to counselors, who were conducting the interview, that she did "not want to talk about it," the report says.

Detectives also retrieved the apartment complex's surveillance video, which recorded the parking lot from three angles between 3:15 a.m. and 4:15 a.m., capturing some of the couple's interactions, the report says.

Bunch is seen walking over to Crockett, holding something up, which appears to be a piece of paper, the report says. Soon after, Bunch is seen backing away from Crockett with his hands up, the report says.

Crockett is seen putting a gun up to Bunch. When Bunch turns around to walk away, Crockett fires a shot, the report says.

"At no point in the video did it appear that Mr. Bunch was a threat to Ms. Crockett," the report says.

Bunch was shot in his back left shoulder, the report says.

Police said they based their decision to arrest Crockett on "the conflicting statements, evidence at the scene and video surveillance."

She was booked into Parish Prison on a count of second-degree murder.
