A man said to have been taunting homeless people gathered under the North Boulevard overpass was arrested Thursday in the May 3 shooting injury of one of those people, Sherelle Diaz.

Keithan Jamaal Turner, 19, of 3303 Lone Oak Drive, Baton Rouge, shot Diaz three times, striking her twice, under the 1700 North Blvd. overpass, according to a police report. A warrant for his arrest was issued May 8.

Diaz told police she had grown tired of the taunting and on May 2 had been attacked by Turner, so she accepted a knife from a friend. The report does not describe what happened in the attack.

The next day, Turner returned to the overpass. Diaz told police he again taunted her with name calling. When she told him to stop, Turner slapped her, and she brandished her knife, the report says. Turner then fired three shots, Diaz and a witness told police.

Diaz suffered a collapsed lung from one of the gunshots, the report says. Her current condition is unknown.

Turner was booked on attempted second-degree murder, according to the police report. Turner, who had recently been released from Parish Prison before the shooting, has five prior arrests: two on obscenity and three on possession of marijuana.
